blogMillville - The last hope for Millville Pride to survive.

Despite the best efforts of certain people who would like to discredit blogMillville, and the fine people who provide content and opinions here, our mission has not changed since we first brought blogMillville to life back in March of 2006.We had no idea back in those early days that this wonderful opportunity for commentary, satire, and general observations would be so well received, and read. We receive thousands of page hits per week. We know this, as our web service provider gives us a report on a regular basis. We do not make money off of advertising, in spite of what a well known twinponder might tell you. We will be forever grateful to our board of selectmen, members of the Twinpond Backwards Boating and Pig Roast Club, big MAC and the Conservation Avengers, Tommy Boy and Lurch and countless others who provide us such great material in order for us to write this wonderful content that we hope you all enjoy. Whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, or the long night, we wish you the best the season has to offer, and a prosperous New Year in 2007.Keep those cards, letters, emails and scoops coming! We assure you, we will keep writing! Let's make 2007 the year for Millville!

Fire Truck down in Flames: A Win for Taxpayers. A Loss for Special Interests.

Dean's motion ignored by Moderator - Truck vote fails to get 2/3rds Majority

FinCom Table is "Empty" Like the Town's Coffers.

John F. Dean's attempt to defer all monetary articles last night due to no FinCom recommendations fell on the deaf ears of Moderator Kelliher.

However sanity prevailed, and with the exception of the "Special Interest Group" other wise known as the Town's Firefighters - all monetary articles were stricken, and no action was taken. We understand that this will have no impact in the town setting its' Tax Rate, nor will it affect the town operation in FY09. Tax bills are probably right around the corner! So Merry Christmas!

The Fire Department's request for a $355K fire truck, that had support of Voters say no to replacement3 of the 5 selectmen (Laura, Lima, Poulin) failed to get the necessary 2/3'rds vote as some of the funds would be borrowed. Arguing against the unnecssary purchase were the Town Accountant, other Selectmen and the former FinCom Chairman.

According to the Call the Chief claims that the present Engine 1 is rusting away. (Lack of use?). He needed the truck ordered now, so they could save $30K in new regulations going into effect on 1/1/09.

Coffin "Cops Out", Savage "Hides Out"

The front page of the Woonsocket Call confirmed today what many folks have been expecting. Possibly no Special Town Meeting tomorrow night because the Finance Committee has only two members. However, more interesting was the statement in the article that HS Helen, our unqualified Executive Secretary, referred all questions concerning the situation to Paul Savage. A true testament to HS Helen's leadership and professionalism. As one would expect, Mr. Savage failed to return a phone call from the Call. Another example of poor leadership and lack of courage. It is unfortu

We make things up as we go along...

We seem to be making things up as we go along here. Very troubling. Seem that the new world order may be being snookered by the veterans of the board and the go-along ExecSec and Town Counsel.

Seems as though with the departure of Mr. Labonte, the FinCom lacks a quorum, and is therefore unable to conduct their business. No dobut the Town Moderator hasn't upheld his sworn oath, and filled the vacancies on this important board.

So we wonder how the town can conduct its' business on 12/8 if there are no FinCom Recommendations?

We think it is about time the town fathers and mothers got together and did what was right here. Stop with the good-old boy approach to these important matters.

THE INSPECTOR NEEDS INSPECTING??

L. Cameron has been conducting food inspections in Millville for several months. However, this could be a violation of the law. L. Cameron is NOT an elected member of the Millville BOH. Is she a certified state food inspector or a certified health agent? Me thinks not. Word is she took a class and the BOH gave her $2500.00 in addition to her secretary wages to do the job. This issue needs to investigated before someone sees an opportunity to make some money in court from the town. What say you all??

We want new toys...

It is really amazing the information you find when you take the time to read the minutes to the BOS meetings.

Since the middle part of September, all the news outlets have been reporting on this "economic" slowdown. This global credit crisis that has been affecting "Main St" and "Wall St" for the past 60 days or so.

We have seen the Commonwealth slash a thousand jobs and a billion dollars from the 2009 Fiscal Budget. It is well known that there will probably be more cuts after the 1st of the year.

Housing values have fallen in excess of 20% year over year since 2007. Foreclosures are on the rise. We wonder how well the tax collections are going now that the second quarter was due on 11/1. A neighboring town is reporting a 93% collection rate down from 98% a year ago.

From reading the minutes however, one would realize that Millville must be immune from this crisis:

Take a look:

Millville supports McCain

In what this observer sees as a most unusual twist in town demographics, in a very close race McCain/Palin took Millville by a small margin over Obama/Biden.

McCain/Palin: 772 votes

Obama/Biden: 733 votes

For those who know town history, Millville (as well as her sister to the East, Blackstone) were once considered the most Democratic towns in the state. A memorable race for Senate back in 1966 in which Edward W. Brooke a Republican announced in his nomination acceptance speech that he would start his campaign in Blackstone and Millville, two towns he lost in 2 years prior when he successfully ran for State Attorney General. He wanted to convince the voters that he should be their candidate for US Senate.

So you're gonna vote for Obama?

By Phil Tympanick

So you’ve decided to vote for Obama, but will do so with some reservations. This article isn’t for those that have been drinking the BO-Kool-Aid since he arrived on the scene in 2004 when he gave the key-note speech at the Democratic Convention. This is for those people who, based on a 4-1 spending differential and clear media bias for BO, have been convinced that their lives will improve under a President Obama administration, and worse, a super majority in the house and senate under which the democrats would have unchallenged power and a majority that could change the world, and not just the United States as we know it.

FinCom Chairman steps down -

- CLARIFICATION -

See below for a clarification on the issues that lead to the action by Mr. Labonte.

We are hoping that someone from the BOS will comment on this story, as it is quite troubling.

Out of respect for the FinCom Chairman, blogMillville has been reluctant to post anything on the resignation of Gerard Labonte, longtime FinCom member and chairman.

We are told that Mr. Labonte had requested to consult with Town Counsel over an issue regarding a matter dealing with the Fire Department Budget.
